Event Description

Advocacy Series: Empowerment Through Connection

Topic: Public Transportation Skills with LakeTran

This educational opportunity is designed for individuals, transition-aged and older, who receive services through the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities to build confidence and independence by teaching practical public transportation skills, including:

  • Destination planning and map navigation
  • Reading bus schedules
  • Fare payment, Easy Fare, and reduced fare programs
  • Rides On Demand (scheduling, canceling, and managing rides)
  • Bus etiquette and safety

The session will include a “Touch-a-Bus” experience and tour, where participants can explore the bus and practice their new transit skills in a supportive, hands-on environment. Learning how to use public transportation can greatly enhance independence, increase community access, and promote healthier lifestyles by walking or biking to bus stops. This is a meaningful step in helping individuals and their families feel confident navigating transportation safely and independently.
