Special Olympics Lake County is operated under the direction of Special Olympics Ohio, a non-profit corporation. Funding for Lake County is through local private and corporate donations, as well as fundraising projects.
The mission of Special Olympics Ohio is to provide year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults who have developmental disabilities.
Athletes at least eight years of age who meet eligibility requirements can participate and compete in 17 sports year round, including:
- Basketball
- Bocce
- Bowling
- Cross-country skiing
- Downhill skiing
- Figure skating
- Flag football
- Snow-boarding
- Speed skating
- Modified soccer
- Modified volleyball
- Softball
- Swimming
- Cycling
- Tennis
- Unified golf
- Track and field
- Wheelchair events
