Special Olympics Lake County is operated under the direction of Special Olympics Ohio, a non-profit corporation. Funding for Lake County is through local private and corporate donations, as well as fundraising projects.
The mission of Special Olympics Ohio is to provide year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children (starting at the age 8 years) and adults who have developmental disabilities.
Athletes at least eight years of age who meet eligibility requirements can participate and compete in 17 sports year round, including:
- Basketball
- Bocce
- Bowling
- Cross-country skiing
- Cycling
- Dance
- Downhill skiing
- Figure skating
- Flag football
- Modified soccer
- Modified volleyball
- Softball
- Snow-boarding
- Speed skating
- Swimming
- Tennis
- Unified golf
- Track and field
- Wheelchair events
