Self-advocacy Services

It’s important to know how to be a self-advocate, as well as how to advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities. Advocacy helps teach people without disabilities about seeing ability first and helps start important conversations about inclusion and education.

Self-advocacy teaches individuals how to advocate for themselves and teaches others without disabilities about the importance of inclusion. All individuals have the right to take control of their lives and make their own life decisions. Self-advocates learn important self-determination tools and also get involved at both the local and state levels.

One way to participate is through the Aktion Club, a community service group sponsored by Kiwanis International, which is open to County Board eligible individuals with developmental disabilities (18 years and older) who want to become community leaders and provide service for others. This organization meets monthly and offers benefits of friendship, fellowship and fun, but most importantly it extends the opportunity to collaborate on a variety of projects that help our community. Learn more by reviewing the Aktion Club Brochure. or email [email protected].
